Expendable Assets

Landers was sitting in his office reading a file when a man came in with a letter.

"Special delivery." The man handed it to him and left.

Landers knew from the lettering that it was from his real employer and hurriedly opened it. It read the same as Ilan’s and he went pale. Munston invaded his line of sight when he bolted for the door and snatched the letter from his hand.

"You don't mind, do you?" Munston read the letter and looked at Landers. "I knew you were in on it."

Landers put on his coat. "I don't have time for this conversation, Munston. I have to leave if I want to live. I have eighteen hours. Please, let me go. You'll never see me again."

"That's not going to fly, Landers. I'm not letting you just disappear. Not until to you tell me everything."

"I promise you, I will if I live past the next few days. Please."

Munston saw the desperation in Lander's eyes and moved away from the door. Landers rushed out and down the hallway. Munston followed him with his eyes. When enough time passed for Landers to be out of the building, he went back to his office and wondered where Landers would go. The phone rang and Munston listened as another body was being reported. He was going alone this time. As he was leaving the station, the chief came out of his office to ask about Landers.

“Where’d Landers go at a time like this? I don’t take my men going AWOL lightly.”

Munston shook his head and didn't answer, leaving the chief in an angered stance.

After inspecting the body at the latest crime scene, Munston sat in his car pondering over whether or not he should report Landers as an accomplice to the murders. He had worked with the man for five years and never knew what he was really like. An officer knocked on the car window, startling him.

"Landers is on the radio."

Munston picked up the communicator. "Where the hell are you?" He hissed loudly.

"No time. Can't say. They're listening."

"What?" Munston exclaimed. "Who's listening? This is a private police channel!"

There was a short paused. "They can tap into anything they want. Remember that." Another short pause. "I need you to do me a favor. I know this is asking too much but I need you to check Charles Ilan's apartment. If he's not there, erase his file."

"Why would I do that, Landers?"

"Because he's on the run too."

Landers was at a gas station in Oregon off Interstate 5 drinking a soda when a silver BMW came up and parked next to him. The door opened, and Charles Ilan emerged. Both men looked at each other with a sense of pity. He reached into his car and pulled out another can of soda and offered it to Ilan.

"Where you headed?" Ilan asked as he popped open the can.

"South, then maybe east. You?"

Ilan shrugged. "Overseas, eventually. But for now," he pulled out a notepad and pen. When he was done writing he turned it around to show Landers.
